Nasher 3:01 Club Inspires Creative Minds

Through the magic of art and self-exploration, members of Girls Inc. freely expressed their artistic abilities during the 3rd annual Nasher 3:01 Club. The theme, "Thinking About Art," guided the four classes during October and November 2010.

Twenty-four girls, ages nine to 11, from the Love Field and West Dallas campuses of Girls Inc., learned how to justify the opinions they share about art in the first class. Based on the likes and dislikes of a "client" who had commissioned artwork, the girls created an art project and were asked to justify their designs.

In the next class, girls were given guidelines to decide how to categorize works of art. They made up their own art categories and then looked through the Nasher Sculpture galleries to see what pieces of art would fit their guidelines. At the end of the day, girls exercised their curatorial skills, creating mini-galleries filled with art that all related to a category of their choice.

The girls learned how to compare one work of art to another in the third class by looking for "what is the same" and "what is different." After viewing the installation Double Torque by Alyson Shotz, girls made their own "thread drawings" and compared their results.

The culmination of the Nasher 3:01 Club experience was on November 17, 2010 with a reception for parents and girls. Everyone toured the museum to view the great works of modern and contemporary sculptures, and parents had the opportunity to see their daughter's expressive artwork.

The mission of The Nasher 3:01 Club is to awaken young minds to the power of innovative thinking through an interactive exploration of new ideas with historical significance and hands-on projects that stimulate creative expression.
