Review of the 2013 Lecture Series

To elevate the discussion about girls and young women in our communities, we launched a lecture series in 2011-2012.  Titled “What is a Girl?,” the Inaugural Annual Lecture Series consisted of four events and examined the characterization of young women from ancient mythology to today’s popular culture and tomorrow’s leadership in science and technology.

The 2013, Second Annual  What is a Girl? Lecture Series, in partnership with the Junior League of Dallas, explored answers to the question of the  physical power of a girl. The series kicked off with, Retired Coach and Athletic Director, Jody Conradt. Jody’s lecture highlighted the historic Title IX legislation implemented at the University of Texas and how that opened more opportunities for girls to play sports in college.

At the second lecture, Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman motivated audiences with her story of growing up in the Bronx playing basketball and how that experience shaped who she is today.  Joining Nancy were Olympians Michelle Carter and Natasha Hastings, each of whom told inspiring stories about striving to be the best in sports at a young age.

The final lecture with Dr. Katie Filkins examined actual corporate circumstances related to women in the workforce. She highlighted some enlightening facts about why women reach the top or not, and how girls can learn the rules of the work game early in life. Plans for next year’s series are underway
